Richard Mille RM052 Skull Tourbillon

When it comes to horology, I take the traditional (and perhaps practical) route. But I have always been a fan of Richard Mille timepieces; avant-garde in terms of materials and design, but traditional in terms of wearability and finishing. The RM collection is now so extensive that it can accommodate both functional pieces and works of art, the RM052 Skeleton Tourbillon is a beautiful example, launched in 2012 as a limited edition in titanium and 6 unique pieces in rose or white gold Set of watches. This watch sparked my interest in memento mori [click here] and is a joy to wear on my wrist.

The RM052 is quite large (50x42.7x15.95 mm), but it's made of titanium, with a rubber strap and deployment, and the signature barrel-shaped case fits perfectly on the wrist. The case also has a hollow design, and the edges are polished, giving it an exquisite appearance.

It would be too flippant of me to describe Cal. The RM052 functions as a skeletonized movement, but in many ways it is. The bridges are made of titanium like the case, and the jaws support the tourbillon cage. The movement is suspended within the case via 4 bridges that formed the crossbones of the old Jolly Roger.

The hand-wound movement (Cal. RM052) has a power reserve of approximately 48 hours and is equipped with a rapidly rotating single barrel to provide constant torque. The tourbillon uses a 9.12mm free spring balance wheel (relatively large because the entire movement feels very compact) with a vibration frequency of 3Hz (21600vph). Under 10x magnification, the hand-finished work on the movement is very apparent - honestly, it's a beautiful piece, with all the traditional embellishments we've come to expect in a piece of Haute Horlogerie. Considering the subject matter, you would almost think it would be rather rough, but it is elegant and beautiful.

Skeletons are not a new theme in horology [click here], but it has rarely been executed so well. It showed a different side of Richard Mille and the whole brand was better for it.
